BP Gulf Oil Spill Leaves Horror In Its Wake (Video) *Dolphins observed in distress, dying, dead in oil slick*

Gulf of Mexico: Dead Bottlenose Dolphin on Beach (May 2010)

Dolphins Observed in Distress, Dying, Dead in Oil Slick

John Wathen of the Waterkeeper Alliance reports the BP Gulf Oil Spill is worse and more extensive than BP is saying. He narrates the dramatic video below as he flies out into and over the Gulf of Mexico. John observes a pod of 36 dolphins struggling to breathe in the oil slick. Then another pod of 18 is seen in the oil spill. A sperm whale just breaching is noted in the oil. Another pod of dolphins is discovered and some are already dead and some are in their death throes.

The three observers in the plane estimated they saw 100+ dolphins, many in distress or dead. The flight was about 90 miles out into the Gulf of Mexico, from Alabama, towards the Deepwater Horizon well. John Wathen goes on to say the dispersants are just "hiding from sight" the extent and damage of the oil spill. The underwater plumes are huge and taking the oxygen out of the water column. The surface burning is also "ludicrous" as huge towers of smoke extend upwards into the atmosphere to burn a minute portion of oil spread out on the Gulf of Mexico.

(MSNBC: Countdown With Keith Olbermann) John Wathen, who photographed and documented the death of animals affected by the oil spill, joins Countdown to recap what he saw.

Oil Puts Brown Pelican Back on Brink

Conservation efforts brought the Brown Pelican back from endangered status. Now the BP Gulf Oil Spill puts pressure on the bird once again.

(MSNBC) Wildlife & science correspondent Jeff Corwin reports on the plight of Louisiana's iconic state bird, which was just taken off the endangered species list in November 2009.

Marine Life Threatened in the Gulf: Alexandra Cousteau (Video) *Impact of BP Gulf Oil Spill on Dolphins*

Impact of BP Gulf Oil Spill on Dolphins

In addition to the young dolphin that washed ashore and died this week in Florida, dozens of dolphins have been found. A definitive link between these deaths and the BP Gulf Oil Spill has yet to be proven. Alexandra Cousteau, granddaughter of world-famous explorer and filmmaker Jacques Cousteau, believes the dolphin deaths being discovered are just the tip of the iceberg. There will be a lot more marine mammal casualties in the future.

She explains the impact and effects of oil on dolphins to Anderson Cooper in the video below. Dolphins are an indicator species whose well-being, or lack thereof, shows the health of the environment and what can happen to humans as well. The dolphins, turtles, sharks, et. al. are fleeing the oil by moving towards shore. However, this area, closer to shore, is an oxygen-depleted environment, which is taking a toll on the marine life in the Gulf of Mexico. The animals dying are not necessarily washing to shore, so the true impact of the BP Gulf Oil Spill is unknown.

CNN Anderson Cooper talks to Alexandra Cousteau about the possible affects the oil spill could have on marine life.

Well Gushing Again, Containment Cap Removed (Videos)

Greenpeace: Rebrand BP Contest

One Million Gallons of Oil Spewed Today into the Gulf of Mexico

The containment cap was removed at about 8:45 a.m. CDT today. As of this post, BP is attempting to place the cap back onto the well. The containment cap has been collecting about 16,000 barrels of oil per day. Reports are that an ROV, a remotely operated vehicle, had bumped the cap closing a valve that provided hot water which prevented hydrate crystals from forming and clogging the containment flow. Engineers removed the cap to determine if hydrate crystals had formed and existed in the collection system.

A second containment system, the Q4000, is operating and estimated to collect 10,000 barrels of oil today.

This is the third time in eight days the containment efforts have been halted. The first occurred on Tuesday, June 15 when there was a fire aboard the surface collection ship Discoverer Enterprise. The second occurred Friday, June 18 when there was an equipment malfunction aboad the surface collection ship Discoverer Enterprise.

CNN's John King discusses today's setback in the Gulf today and the mechanics of the containment cap removal.
