Tiger Conservation: Why It Will Work (Video) *Fighting the Forces of Extinction*

Tiger Conservation: Why It Will Work

As humanity transforms (terraforms) the Earth, suitable habitat diminishes for other species and biodiversity decreases. Large species requiring expansive habitats such as tigers, become isolated in islands of suitable and protected habitats due to human encroachment. There are people and organizations that are fighting these forces of extinction. Below is a video about the World Wildlife Fund's campaign, Save Tigers Now, to stop the elimination of habitat and therefore decrease in numbers, of wild tigers.

(World Wildlife Fund) Wild tigers can do things that seem impossible -- like bounce back from extremely close encounters with the forces of extinction if we give them half a chance. But do we have the will to make that happen?

Save Tigers Now is a global campaign by WWF, supported by Leonardo DiCaprio, that runs during the Chinese Year of the Tiger, 2010. Our goal is to build political and public support to double the number of wild tigers by 2022, the next Year of the Tiger.

Grizzly Bears Moving Into Human Territory: Population Increasing, Running Out Of Space

Even though the Grizzly Bear population has increased, their habitat has not. The inevitable Grizzly Bear encounters by humans are increasing and dangerous.

MSNBC Once on the brink of extinction, Grizzly Bears are are making a comeback and wildlife experts are capturing more Grizzlies than ever before.

The World's Oldest Living Things (Video) *Rachel Sussman's worldwide quest*

The World's Oldest Living Things

Rachel Sussman introduces us to the world's oldest continuously living organisms. For the past 5 years Sussman has been researching, working with biologists, and traveling all over the world to to find continuously living organisms that are 2,000 years old and older.

(TED Talks) Rachel Sussman shows photographs of the world's oldest continuously living organisms -- from 2,000-year-old brain coral off Tobago's coast to an "underground forest" in South Africa that has lived since before the dawn of agriculture.

About Rachel Sussman
(TED Talks) For the past five years, Rachel Sussman has traveled around the globe photographing organisms that have lived for more than 2,000 years. From 500,000-year-old actinobacteria in the Siberian permafrost a lone spruce standing on a mostly barren mountain in Sweden, her images capture both the robustness and fragility of life. While these organisms' longevity dwarfs even that of human civilization, they all depend on ecosystems in fine balance -- a balance thrown into question by human encroachment and climate change. Sussman's work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe in venues including the Museum of Natural History. "The collection offers a rare perspective of life on Earth. Some of the organisms Sussman has captured look alien. Many were alive in the bronze age. Others were eking out an existence long before modern humans rose up and migrated out of Africa." (The Guardian)

Oil Rig Explosion & Fire in Gulf of Mexico Today: No Oil Sheen

There were initial reports today of an oil sheen after a Mariner Energy offshore platform, Vermilion Oil Platform 380, exploded and caught fire today. However, the US Coast Guard is now saying there is no oil sheen. The platform had shut down for maintenance and was not in production.

(MSNBC) An offshore oil platform exploded and caught fire in the Gulf of Mexico Thursday, just west of where the Deepwater Horizon exploded in April. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.
