Gulf Oil Spill: BP's Options to Seal the Leak (Video) *Kill, Baby, Kill!*

▲▲▲

(How about Kill, Baby, Kill?)

Day 33: BP Will Attempt Top Kill on Tuesday

Next up is a Top Kill attempt by BP, reportedly on Tuesday, to stop the leak.  This method apparently has the best probability of success among immediate options.  Other options are a Junk Shot, a Hot Tap, or even placing another Blowout Preventer on top of the existing, failed Blowout Preventer.  The final solution are the two Relief Wells being drilled and injecting cement into the Deepwater Horizon Well to plug the leak.  However, it may take up to two months before the Relief Wells will reach the leaking well.

Gulf Oil Spill: BP Concedes Oil Leak Bigger Than Claimed (Video) "We cannot trust BP"

▲▲▲

Day 31: How Big Is This Economic and Environmental Disaster?

Now we find out the BP Gulf Oil Spill is higher than the 5,000 barrels per day reported over the weeks.  In addition, BP is reporting the capture rate of the riser insertion tube has fallen to 2,200 barrels per day (CNBC: BP Says Capture Rate Falls To 2,200 Barrels A Day).  Next attempt by BP will be a "Top Kill" or "Mud Kill" on maybe Tuesday.  This would, in theory, stop the leak completely but has never been done at 5,000 feet below the surface of the sea.

Below: MSNBC Video on the status of the Gulf Oil Spill. "We cannot trust BP". Oil reaches beaches and marshes in Lousiana.

Insertion Tube Is Operating As Temporary, Partial Solution (Videos) *BP Gulf Oil Spill*

▲▲▲

How Much of Leaking Oil Can Be Siphoned Off?
(Day 27 since explosion of Deepwater Horizon Well on April 20)

BP announced Sunday that the riser insertion tube has been successfully installed, oil and gas are being siphoned from the well to tankers on the surface, and the rate of flow to the surface is slowly being increased.  The oil leak has therefore been slowed, but by how much?  What percentage of the oil leak can ultimately be intercepted and siphoned?  These questions should be answered in the next few days.

The riser insertion tube is only a temporary solution.  The next permanent solution to be attempted is probably a "mud kill" where drilling mud will be inserted into the well to attempt to plug the leak.  Another possible solution is an attempt to replace the blowout preventer.  Next there is the the possibility BP will attempt a "junk shot" or "bridging agent" which consists of forcing materials, junk, into the blowout preventer to clog up the blowout preventer and therefore the leaking well.  Finally, and probably the ultimate permanent solution, is the one relief well that is now in its 14th day of drilling and a second relief well that reportedly began drilling on Sunday.  However, the relief wells are a few to several weeks away from reaching the Deepwater Horizon well.

Gulf Oil Spill: BP Press Conference Update (Video) *Mitigation efforts continue*

▲▲▲

Day 23 of Gulf Oil Spill

(Photo: Brown Pelican threatened by spill, currently nesting on barrier islands in Gulf of Mexico)

BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles held a press conference and update on the company's efforts this afternoon (full video below).  He stated that it appears the underwater dispersants, near the actual leak itself, are working.  Another attempt of the key solution, the 6 inch riser insertion tube to be placed within the 21 inch leaking drill pipe, will be later tonight.  This tube was pulled back to the surface yesterday, but is now back on the sea floor for another attempt.

COO Suttles stated that relief well activity continues, one well is being drilled (now on 13th day of drilling) and another is to be started on Sunday.  Weather has not been favorable for oil slick skimming or burning operations.  The massive response effort now involves 17,0000 people, 1.2 million feet of boom, 38 aircraft, 650 vessels, 4 states, government agencies, and numerous contractors.

Let us hope that the riser insertion tube can be successfully installed tonight to at least mitigate the spill, if not totally contain it!

Gulf Oil Spill: Big Oil Blame Game (Video) BP, Transocean, Halliburton: "It's somebody else's fault!"

▲▲▲

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee held hearings today on the BP Gulf Oil Spill.  BP America Chairman Lamar McKay, Transocean CEO Steven Newman, and Halliburton Tim Probert took questions from the Committee.  The gist is all 3 companies blamed the others.

BP America (well owner) could not say yet why its subcontractor Transocean’s supposedly fail-safe blowout preventer failed.

Transocean (rig operator) said investigation should focus on "why a cased and cemented wellbore suddenly and catastrophically failed."

Halliburton (well servicer), which did the cementing, said the company’s work was done "in accordance with industry standards."

I also heard some of the BP America question and answer session as the Senators asked if they would pay all costs.  BP repeatedly said they would pay "legitimate" claims, expenses, costs.  Determining what is "legitimate", leaves what BP is willing to pay wide open.  Undoubtedly BP America attorneys had coached the executives to just say "legitimate".

Last, but not least, the Countdown with Keith Olbermann MSNBC segment reporting on the Senate hearings.  Please note that Big Oil Senator James M. Inhofe (Republican - Oklahoma) is a Drill, Baby, Drill! advocate, anti-environment, and has been bought by, sold by, and in the hip pocket of Big Oil.
