Amazing New Species Discovered in Amazon (Videos) "Amazon Alive!" Report by WWF

Amazon Pink River Dolphin
"In 2006, scientific evidence showed that there is a separate species – Inia boliviensis – of the dolphin in Bolivia, although some scientists consider it a subspecies of Inia geoffrensis. In contrast to the Amazon River dolphins, their Bolivian relatives have more teeth, smaller heads, and smaller but wider and rounder bodies."

New Species Discovered in Amazon: Over 1,200 in past 10 years, 1 every 3 days

Amazon Alive! A Decade of Discoveries 1999-2009 The World Wildlife Fund presented the "Amazon Alive" report to the UN Convention on Biodiversity in Nagoya, Japan this week. The report reviews the discovery of 637 plants, 257 fish, 216 amphibians, 55 reptiles, 16 birds and 39 mammals. Two videos are below from CNN covering the report.

WWF "Amazon Alive!" Report Highlights:
The first new anaconda species identified since 1936
An extraordinary species, Ranitomeya amazonica, a frog with an incredible burst of flames on its head
A parrot, Pyrilia aurantiocephala, has an extraordinary bald head, displays an astonishing spectrum of colors
Probable separate species, if not subspecies, of pink river dolphin in Bolivia,  Inia boliviensis
A blind and tiny, bright red new species of catfish that lives mainly in subterranean waters

Rainforest Destruction WWF states, "Although most of the Amazon region remains fairly undisturbed, the threats to it are rapidly increasing. During the last 50 years humankind has caused the destruction of at least 17% of the Amazon rainforest – this is an area greater than the size of Venezuela, or twice the size of Spain." Francisco Ruiz: "Urgent and immediate action is needed if we are to avoid this frightening scenario. The fate of the Amazon - and of its species whether known or yet to be discovered - depends on a significant shift in the current way development is embraced by all Amazon countries."

WWF Living Amazon Initiative "Through its Living Amazon Initiative, WWF is working towards a comprehensive approach to work with governments, civil society, and the private sector to promote the transformational process needed to bring about an alternative scenario to better preserve the Amazon’s biodiversity."

(CNN) More than 1,200 new species have been found in the Amazon. CNN's Josh Levs reports.

BP Gulf Oil Spill: Oil Is Still There (Videos) *Dead fish, oiled birds, oiled beaches, weathered oil slicks*

BP Gulf Oil Spill Continues

BP Gulf Oil Spill: Oil Is Still There

The BP Gulf Oil Spill is still impacting the ecosystem and inhabitants, both human and animals. Reports of oiled birds, dead fish, weathered oil slicks, and health problems continue. The two videos below illustrate these issues on the Gulf coast. The first is a Project Gulf Impact video on the continuing effects of the BP Gulf Oil Spill on human health. The second video documents dead fish and oil on the beaches of Grand Isle, Louisiana.

From The Gulf Stream To The Bloodstream - THE VIDEO BP DOESN'T WANT YOU TO SEE! However, here is what Allen and the corporate media are not talking about - residents along the Gulf Coast are sick from the effects of the oil gusher. "The harm dealt by this silent enemy is beginning to creep into the lives of those living and working in the Gulf. The problem has been lurking in the Gulf since the first days of the BP oil spill and now has the potential ignite a disaster unlike any this country has ever seen," reports Project Gulf Impact, an organization of citizen journalists who are doing what the corporate media refuses to do. "The residents of the Gulf of Mexico are entering a crisis whose scope cannot be calculated. Several symptoms have been reported, from subtle to severe: skin rashes and infections, upper respiratory burning, congestion and cough, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and neurological symptoms including short-term memory loss and coordination problems. These health problems, if acknowledged at all, are mis-diagnosed, buried, and mis-attributed."

Census of Marine Life Completed (Videos) *10-year effort discovers what lives in the sea*

▲▲▲

The flamingo tongue snail, Cyphoma gibbosum, from the British West Indies, is one of thousands of new species uncovered as part of the first Census of Marine Life

Census of Marine Life Completed

An extraordinary 10-year international effort to document the world's marine life has been completed. The results will serve as a "global baseline" for assessing the state of the ocean's species over the decades to come. What is the Census of Marine Life? "The Census of Marine Life is a global network of researchers in more than 80 nations engaged in a 10-year scientific initiative to assess and explain the diversity, distribution, and abundance of life in the global ocean."

Two videos are below, the first is an MSNBC news report and the second is a Census of Marine Life underwater video with background music definitely worth watching.

(MSNBC Today Show) Scientists wrapped up their first global census of sea life today, documenting an underwater world that turns out to be livelier and more connected than they thought it would be when they began the project 10 years ago.

(Census of Marine Life: Life Below the Waves) Beautifully shot footage of a variety of marine life.

About the Census: A Decade of Discovery 2,700 scientists, 80+ nations, 540 expeditions, US$ 650 million, 2,600+ scientific publications, 6,000+ potential new species, 28 million distribution records and counting. These numbers only begin to describe the scope of the Census of Marine Life, a 10-year international effort undertaken in to assess the diversity (how many different kinds), distribution (where they live), and abundance (how many) of marine life—a task never before attempted on this scale. The Census stimulated the discipline of marine science by tackling these issues globally, and engaging some 2,700 scientists from around the globe, who participated in 540 expeditions and countless hours of land-based research. The scientific results were reported on October 4, 2010.

Tilo Nadler and the Endangered Primate Rescue Center based at Cuc Phuong National Park is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, breeding, research and conservation of the endangered primates of Vietnam. The final goal of the EPRC is the establishment of stable populations of highly endangered primate species in captivity as a source for further reintroduction programs.

(CNN) CNN's Dan Rivers reports on one man's mission to save critically endangered primates in Vietnam.

BP Gulf Oil Spill Continues
Tar Balls Still on Alabama Beaches

The BP Gulf Oil Spill continues even though the well is capped and much of the major media has moved on. This recent report by TV channel 5, WKRG, Mobile and Pensacola, reveals tar balls on the beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama and an oil sheen off the coast outwards to four miles. WKRG takes to the air to survey the problem and interviews clean up workers.
